THE DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON READING
COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 4
BANYUWANGI 2009/ 2010 ACADEMIC YEAR.

This research was intended to
describe the second year students’ reading comprehension achievement in SMP Negeri
4 Banyuwangi in the 2009/2010 Academic year. This research design was
descriptive quantitative. The
respondent determination method used was cluster
random sampling by lottery. The respondent was
the second year students in SMP Negeri 4 Banyuwangi in the 2009/2010 Academic
year. The number of respondent was 44 students or two classes taken randomly by
lottery. The primary data was obtained from reading comprehension test. The form
of the test was multiple-choice test. The results of reading test were analyzed
statistically in the percentage. Then, they were analyzed descriptively to find
out the students’ achievement
in reading comprehension, especially in word comprehension,
sentence comprehension, paragraph comprehension and the text comprehension.
Documents and interview were used to collect the supporting data. The research
results showed that the second year students’
reading comprehension achievement was categorized as enough (59%)
The details are poor (51.1%) for word comprehension, enough (57%) for sentence
comprehension, more than enough (70.8%) for
paragraph comprehension and enough (62.9%) for the text comprehension. The most
difficult comprehension was word comprehension, while the easiest comprehension
was paragraph comprehension. This means that they still had problem with word
comprehension, and a bit of sentence comprehension. Therefore these skills need
to be improved, in order to improve the students’
reading comprehension achievement.
